Rain Drops Keep Fallin' on My Head

There is little in the world quite as bad as waking up at 3 in the morning to the smell of raw sewage.

It's been raining here in New Hampshire hard for the last day or so and, as our little slice of heaven is prone to do, we've flooded. Let me describe the scene for you: Picture a little property (little less than an acre) with a stream to the left behind a stone wall and a pond to the back also behind a stone wall. Now, picture a deep depression on the side of the house (where there are some dog houses and some runs). Now, add a dirt road as the only means to reach the house.

Now add a shit load of rain.

Our road is gone - it's still dark but the rapids I saw under the light of the flash light leave little to the imagination. Some boards that were holding a table up in the back yard are now in the front yard. The dog run is completely filled and that new lake is edging its way into the front lawn.

It's still raining.

My mom and dad were woken up just a little while ago by the fire department - not to see if we're all right but to see if we've flooded. As if, by now, that should be some kind of surprise. They don't clean out the culvet that would have drained the dog pen and they didn't stop our neighbors from building a dike that diverts most of the water from the pond/ Stream (which is on their property) into our yard.

Take it from me, small town politics suck.

Our drive way will need to be replaced. Luckily for us, the drive way is made out of dirt too - which means that the town will probably fix it (or fill the ensuing whole with dirt) for free. That won't replace our broken fences or recover our property from across the street or fix our septic or make sure the water from our well is still okay to drink but, gosh darn it, at least we'll have a damn drive way!

I can still hear the rain and still smell the septic. Honestly, the main thing I'm worried about is whether or not the road will be fixed by Monday so I don't have to email my professors that my road has been washed away. Since today is Sunday and since, according to the Weather Channel, it's supposed to rain today too, I doubt it. Which means that we will be stuck here until whenever our highway department fixes the road. I hope no one needs an ambulance before Tuesday.

When the sun rises, my mom's going to take pictures of the damage with her digital camera. She wants to get a lawyer and she wants a little compensation because our town doesn't take care of our road. She's tired of having to eat the damages when ever this happens to us. She wants the town to listen for once.

I hope that, for once, Mom isn't just talking tough.

I know that a lot of people are much more worse off than us right now and I don't like the thought that I'm just whining, but I do feel a little better for venting about it.

That's right. Take action. Your mom is doing the right thing. But she can't do it alone. I don't know much about politics, but I know that if only one person tries to address an issue, they won't do what they can to fix it. Since you live in such a small town, maybe they'll listen if everyone has something to say. Anyway, good luck against the system.

We've been getting alot of rain in Alabama lately, too. Not quite as bad as you guys, but still alot. As a matter of fact, it's still raining right now. And where is all that rain coming from?
